On December 13, about thirty soldiers came to a Chinese house at #5 Hsing Lu Kao in the southeastern part of Nanking, and demanded entrance. The door was opened by the landlord, a Mohammedan named Ha. They killed him immediately with a revolver and also Mr. Hsia, who knelt before them after Ha's death, begging them not to kill anyone else. Mrs. Ha asked them why they had killed her husband and they shot her dead. Mrs. Hsia was dragged out from under a table in the guest hall where she had tried to hide with her one-year old baby. After being stripped and raped by one or more men, she was bayonetted in the chest, and then had a bottle thrust into her vagina, the baby being killed with a bayonet. Some soldiers then went to the next room where were Mrs. Hsia's parents, age 76 and 74, and her two daughters aged 16 and 14. They were about to rape the girls when the grandmother tried to protect them. The soldiers killed her with a revolver. The grandfather grasped the body of his wife and was killed. The two girls were then stripped, the older being raped by 2-3 men, and the younger by 3. The older girl was stabbed afterwards and a cane was rammed into her vagina. The younger girl was bayonetted also but was spared the horrible treatment that had been meted out to her sister and her mother. The soldiers then bayonetted another sister of between 7-8, who was also in the room. The last murders in the house were of Ha's two children, aged 4 and 2 years respectively. The older was bayonetted and the younger split down through the head with a sword. After being wounded the 8-year-old girl crawled to the next room where lay the body of her mother. Here she staid for 14 days with her 4-year-old sister who had escaped unharmed. The two children lived on puffed rice and the rice crusts that form in the pan when the rice is cooked. It was from the older of these children that the photographer was able to get part of the story, and verify and correct certain details told him by a neighbor and a relative. The child said the soldiers came every day taking things from the house, but the two children were not discovered as they hid under some old sheets.
All the people in the neighborhood fled to the Refugee Zone when such terrible things began to happen. After 14 days the old woman shown in the picture returned to the neighborhood and found the two children. It was she who led the photographer to an open space where the bodies had been taken afterwards. Through questioning her and Mrs. Hsia's brother and the little girl, a clear knowledge of the terrible tragedy was gained. The picture shows the bodies of the 16 and 14 year old girls, each lying in a group of people slain at the same time. Mrs. Hsia and her baby are shown last.

一二月一三日、約三〇人の兵士が、南京の南東部にある新路口五番地の中国人の家にやってきて、なかに入れろと要求した。戸は馬というイスラム教徒の家主によって開けられた。兵士はただちにかれを拳銃で撃ち殺し、馬が死んだ後、兵士の前に跪いて他の者を殺さないように懇願した夏氏を撃ち殺した。馬夫人がどうして夫を殺したのか問うと、かれらは彼女も撃ち殺した。夏夫人は、一歳になる自分の赤ん坊と客広間のテーブルの下に隠れていたが、そこから引きずり出された。彼女は、一人か、あるいは複数の男によって着衣を剥がされ強姦された後、胸を銃剣で刺され、膣に瓶を押し込まれた。赤ん坊は銃剣で刺殺された。何人かの兵士が隣の部屋に踏み込むと、そこには夏夫人の七六歳と七四歳になる両親と、一六歳と一四歳になる二人の娘がいた。かれらが少女を強姦しようとしたので、祖母は彼女たちを守ろうとした。兵士は祖母を拳銃で撃ち殺した。妻の死体にしがみついた祖父も殺された。二人の少女は服を脱がされ、年上の方が二、三人に、年下の方が三人に強姦された。その後、年上の少女は刺殺され、膣に杖が押し込まれた。年下の少女も銃剣で突かれたが、姉と母に加えられたようなひどい仕打ちは免れた。さらに兵士たちは、部屋にいたもう一人の七、八歳になる妹を銃剣で刺した。この家で最後の殺人の犠牲者は、四歳と二歳になる馬氏の二人の子どもであった。年上の方は銃剣で刺され、年下の方は刀で頭を切り裂かれた。傷を負った八歳の少女は、母の死体が横たわる隣の部屋まで這って行った。彼女は、逃げて無事だった四歳の妹と一四日間そこに居続けた。二人の子どもは、ふやけた米と、米を炊いたとき鍋についたコゲを食べて暮らした。撮影者は、この八歳の子から話の部分部分を聞き出し、いくつか細かな点で近所の人や親戚の話と照合し、修正した。この子が言うには、兵士たちは毎日やってきて、家から物を持って行ったが、二人の子どもは古シーツの下に隠れていたので発見されなかった。
このような恐ろしいことが起こり始めると、近所の人はみな、難民区へ避難した。一四日後、フィルムに映った老女が近所に戻り、二人の子どもを見つけた。彼女が撮影者〔の私〕を、死体が後に持ち去られた広々とした場所を案内してくれた。
彼女と夏氏の兄、さらには八歳の少女に問いただすことによって、この惨劇に関する明確な知識が得られた。このフィルムは、同じころに殺害された人の屍の群に横たわる一六歳と一四歳の少女の死体を映し出している。夏夫人と彼女の赤ん坊は最後に映し出される。

玄関を、①マアという名のイスラム教徒の家主が開けた。すると、ただちに彼らはマアを拳銃で殺した上、もう誰も殺さないでと、マアの死体に跪いて頼む②シアさん Mr.Hsia をも殺した。なぜ夫を殺したのかと③マアの妻が尋ねると、彼らはマアの妻をも殺した。
④シアの妻は⑤一歳の赤ん坊と客間のテーブルの下に隠れていたが、そこから引きずり出された。そして、一人かもっと多くの男たちから裸にされ、強姦された後、銃剣で胸を刺されて殺された。その上、陰部に瓶を突っ込まれ、赤子も銃剣で殺された。
それから、何人かの兵士が隣の部屋へと行った。そこには、シアの妻の⑥七十六歳と⑦七十四歳になる両親、それに⑧十六歳と⑨十四歳になるシアの娘がいた。この娘たちを彼らが強姦しようとしたその時、祖母が娘を守ろうとして拳銃で殺された。祖父が妻の体をつかむと、祖父も殺された。
それから、二人の少女が裸にされた。上の少女は二、三人に強姦され、下の少女は三人に強姦された。その後、上の少女は刺されて陰部に茎を詰め込まれた。下の少女も銃剣で突き殺されたが、母や姉の受けたぞっとするような扱いは免れた。
それから、兵士たちはもう一人の⑩七、八歳になる妹も銃剣で突き殺した。同じくその部屋にいたからである。
この家の最後の殺人は⑪四歳と⑫二歳になるマアの二人の子供 children （筆者註：性別不明）の殺人であった。上の子は銃剣で突き殺され、下の子は刀で真二つに斬られた。
⑬その八歳の少女 the 8-year old girl は傷を負った後、母の死体のある隣の部屋に這って行った。無傷で逃げおおせた⑭四歳の妹 her 4-year old sister と一緒に、この子はここに十四日間居残った。この二人の子供はふかした米を食べて生きた。
写真撮影者の私が、この話の一部を得ることができたのは、上の八歳の少女からで、詳細は一人の隣人 a neighbor と一人の親戚 a relative から語ってもらって、確認と訂正ができた。
兵士たち the soldiers は毎日この家に物を取るためやって来たが、二人は古い敷布（シーツ）の下に隠れていたので発見されなかったと、この八歳の少女は語った。
このような恐ろしいことが起こり始めた時、近所の住民はみな避難民地帯に逃げた。それから十四日して、このフィルムに出て来る⑮老女性 the old woman が近所に戻って、二人の子供を発見した。その後、死体が全て取り除かれたあとの部屋 an open space where the bodies had been taken afterwards に、写真撮影者の私を案内したのは、この老女性であった。彼女や、シアさんの⑯弟（または兄） Mrs. Hsia's brother と、この小さな女の子にたいする質問を通じて、恐るべき悲劇についての疑問の余地なき理解が得られたのである。
