Treasures of 1,000 years: wonderful scenes of Japan in London First Day at the Bushido
by Percival Phillips, Daily Express, 16 May 1910

"There are ten Ainu, living in low, thatched huts and protected from the demoralizing world by a sixpenny turnstile. They held a kind of all-day levee on Saturday, squatting in a mat beside their fire-box and household utensils, and bowing to the people who peered at them through the little windows of their houses. Chief Kasame, the doyen of the party, looks like a nut-brown edition of Father Time. He is a benevolent old gentleman, with long, curling whiskers, and he smiled blandly on all visitors. It is sad to think that the smile may have masked a cannibalistic appetite - a heritage from his great-grandfather - and that the interest with which he eyed a portly gentleman from the Midlands was probably inspired by sinister motives. The four women in the Ainu settlement are very proud of their blue-black tattooed moustaches.

The Formosans are not quite ready for the public. They are muscular, rather short-tempered persons, who look on headhunting as a pastime. They are trying to make their enclosure as home like as possible, but they chafe somewhat under the restrictions of an effete civilization which prevent a man from indulging in a legitimate hobby. They have been warned that they must be on their best behaviour."
